US measles cases hit a 30-year high

The United States recorded 2,371 confirmed measles infections by the end of July, surpassing last year's total, with clusters in Arizona, South Carolina and Utah.

Delaware announced its first case in more than a decade in July, and officials declared an outbreak two days later with five known cases. The Guardian ties the pattern to falling vaccination coverage: MMR coverage among Delaware kindergartners has slipped from 98.5% in 2016 to 94.1%, against the roughly 95% considered essential for herd immunity. Robert Rosenbaum, Delaware's medical director for emergency medical services and preparedness, put the risk on those who cannot be vaccinated. “We don’t want to be below that threshold. And the lower we get, the more likelihood there is that someone who can’t be vaccinated yet – because of their age or because of their immune status – is going to come into contact with someone who has unfortunately contracted measles,” he said.
The response The Guardian describes is narrow and procedural: vaccination and contact tracing. Contact tracing is how Delaware officials found four additional cases after the first patient tested positive. The first four patients were unvaccinated men in Kent county, while the fifth was vaccinated and had very mild symptoms. William Chasanov, an infectious disease physician at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, described a public that increasingly treats vaccination as optional. “There was a shift in thought that ‘maybe I don’t need vaccines for things that I haven’t seen,’” Chasanov said. More than 60 people took MMR shots at clinics and mobile units the day after Delaware's first case was announced.
