Russian barrage on Kyiv kills at least nine

August 1, 2026

Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones on Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring 28, two days after a strike killed at least 10 across Ukraine.

AP News reports that the strikes follow a major Russian attack two days earlier that killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 50 across Ukraine, and that Moscow appears to be pressing its advantage while Kyiv runs short of Western-supplied anti-ballistic missile defenses. The Kyiv Independent, BBC, The Guardian and Reuters carry the same core account, and Reuters adds in its own coverage that Ukraine is appealing for Patriot interceptors.

The details converge. The Kyiv Independent reports the State Emergency Service count: at least nine confirmed dead, 28 injured including four children, and 105 people rescued from damaged buildings, with BBC carrying the same figures. BBC reports that Mayor Vitali Klitschko described a ballistic missile attack and that AFP counted more than 10 explosions. AP News reports the heaviest damage in the Darnytskyi District, where seven people were killed and 14 injured as fires spread through houses, vehicles and an administrative building, an account The Guardian corroborates.

The attack itself, the districts hit and the injury figures are settled across all five outlets. The final toll is not: rescue crews were still pulling people from damaged buildings when the emergency service gave its count.

Still developing

The final casualty count is unsettled while rescue operations continue, and none of the outlets yet report whether Ukraine's appeal for Patriot interceptors will be answered.
