Republican Rep. John James is running for governor, which leaves Michigan's 10th Congressional District without an incumbent for the first time since it was redistricted in 2022, The Hill reports. The Associated Press, in wire copy carried by CBS News, reports that two Democrats entered the race in the week he announced. The district includes southern Macomb County and parts of Oakland County in the Detroit suburbs, an area the AP describes as a hub of the auto industry.
Fox News reports that James beat Democrat Carl Marlinga 48.8% to 48.3% in 2022 and won reelection over him 51.1% to 45.0% in 2024. The Hill reports that Trump won the district by 1 percentage point in 2020 and by 7 points in 2024. After the primary, Roll Call reports, House Democrats' campaign arm added Hines to its Red to Blue program for top recruits.
CBS News projected Bouchard the winner of a three-way Republican primary on Aug. 4, and Hines the winner of the Democratic primary over former Commerce Department attorney Eric Chung and former Pontiac Mayor Tim Greimel. CBS News reports that Bouchard served in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and is the son of Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. Fox News reports that he was deployed to Iraq and the southern border, received a Bronze Star and has not held office before, and that Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson endorsed him.
Hines is a former special victims prosecutor who ran unsuccessfully for Macomb County prosecutor in 2024, CBS News reports. Roll Call reports she is backed by EMILY's List, End Citizens United and Marlinga. Bouchard told Fox News Digital that the contrast with Hines on crime will be a main focus of his campaign, and Hines responded in a statement contrasting her career as a prosecutor with his military background, Fox News reports.
Roll Call reports that through the end of June, Bouchard had raised $1.4 million and had $1.1 million on hand, while Hines had raised $1.2 million and had $193,000 banked ahead of her primary. Semafor reports that the two parties' campaign arms have begun coordinated ad buys with House candidates in tight races, and that Hines is among them.
Hines responded in a statement to Fox News Digital after Bouchard discussed crime in an interview with the outlet.
“Mike Bouchard Jr. has never put a predator behind bars, and he's never lived in Macomb a day in his life. I spent my entire career working with law enforcement to put serial rapists, child predators, murderers and traffickers in prison. I'm running for Congress to protect the families in my community, and to fight against the corruption that's rampant in D.C.”
Hines spoke in a campaign video, quoted by Fox News after her Democratic primary win.
“My work was a different kind of chaos. Protecting families from predators isn't just a job for me. It's a mission. Now families like ours are getting screwed by a system that only works for the rich”
Hines was quoted in Fox News coverage of her Democratic primary win.
“Congress has too many millionaires but not nearly enough moms who get things done”
Hines spoke at the April 2025 launch of her campaign, days after James announced his run for governor.
“Our kids are facing some of the most incredible challenges with cell phones and social media and mental health issues. This is a really serious and trying time for children and families in our community”
Bouchard was asked in an interview with Fox News Digital, days after the Aug. 4 primary, whether Michigan voters are swayed by far-left candidates.
“The people in Michigan are hard workers. They work hard, they love their families, and you know what? They're moderates. They go back and forth. They look at Democrats, they'll look at Republicans. They don't want partisan politics. They want someone who's going to deliver results for them. And that's why I got in this race is to deliver real, meaningful results.”
Bouchard discussed crime and his general-election opponent in an interview with Fox News Digital days after the Aug. 4 primary.
“You look across a lot of the prosecutors across the country. Some enforce the rules on the books, some don't. Some blame victims, and some are really kind to the offenders. I stand for protecting victims and making sure that the offenders go to prison”
Bouchard spoke in a campaign video, quoted by Fox News after his Republican primary win.
“Under President Trump, I led missions on the southern border; back then we got the job done. But on day one, Joe Biden shut us all down; he opened the border”
Bouchard spoke to Fox News Digital ahead of Veterans Day 2025, shortly after announcing his campaign.
“The interest rates are too high, and people can't afford to buy the home that they want. There are a lot of things that we can do at the federal level to reduce that regulation, cut red tape and make it easier for people who are starting families to buy a house, move into the house that they want and own that home.”
Bouchard spoke to Fox News Digital ahead of Veterans Day 2025, shortly after announcing his campaign.
“If we lose this seat and a couple others, we will lose the House. If that happens, I'm worried that the Democrats are gonna impeach the president for the next two years, so I want to stand with him and prevent that from happening.”
