October 28, 2026
CBC and The Guardian report that the fast-moving Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C.) has reached 10,000 confirmed cases, government data showed on Tuesday, as health authorities race to slow the spread of the disease in multiple African countries.
RTÉ reports that most of those infected had recently travelled to the DRC. October 27 (Reuters) - The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Democratic Republic of Congo has risen above 10,000, government data showed on Tuesday, a milestone that coincides with growing fears the epidemic could spread to more African countries, Reuters reports. Reuters reports that the outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola, was announced in mid-May and has since become the largest and deadliest in Congo, surpassing a 2018-2020 epidemic.

CBC, RTÉ, and Reuters report that it's so far been recorded in five countries, including Uganda, which saw 21 cases and three deaths but no new reported cases since late June, and France, a case involving a doctor who returned from D.R.C. and later recovered in hospital.
According to CBC and Al Jazeera, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has said at least 95 percent of cases must come from the known contacts of infected people for the outbreak to be considered under control. Earlier this month, Kenya reported its first case and went on to announce nine cases in total, after a man who had travelled from Congo via Uganda died in Nairobi, RTÉ and Reuters report.

The “unprecedented” spread of the Ebola outbreak means it could reach the UK and other countries, according to one of Africa’s top health officials, The Guardian reports. African countries had committed $120m, he said, while the rest is meant to come from international donors including the US, the UK and the EU. The long-promised creation of a provincial database that would reveal the owners of secret companies dates back to the Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia’s final report in June, 2022, The Globe and Mail reports. Ebola is a highly contagious, severe, and often fatal illness, The Guardian reports.

The Guardian reports that the “unprecedented” spread of the Ebola outbreak means it could reach the UK and other countries, according to one of Africa’s top health officials. Among the many challenges facing the response is the lack of any approved vaccines or treatments for the rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola behind the epidemic, RTÉ reports. A recurring problem in the spread in Africa is what appears to be lax surveillance efforts, as most of the first cases were confirmed long after people started showing symptoms or after travelling, CBC reports.
