Reuters reports that ADEN/DUBAI, October 28 (Reuters) - Yemen's Houthis attacked Aden airport on Wednesday, government officials said, after the Iran-aligned group warned people to evacuate the facility as fighting escalated in the impoverished country caught in the wider Middle East conflict. Strikes blamed on Saudi Arabia killed 14 people in Houthi-held Yemen, while the group targeted the perimeter of the airport in government stronghold Aden, the latest violence since Yemen's war reignited this summer, RTÉ reports.
Reuters reports that the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa and most of northwestern Yemen, have repeatedly targeted Aden airport in the past. The renewed fighting has shattered a 2022 UN-brokered truce that had largely halted major attacks in the conflict, which began after the Houthis drove the government from Sanaa in 2014, RTÉ and Reuters report.
According to Reuters, residents in the southern port city, where the internationally recognised, Saudi-backed government is based, said they heard an explosion near the airport, a humanitarian lifeline and the main gateway to southern Yemen. Two missiles also landed within the airport perimeter earlier this month, a day after a deadly missile attack struck the presidential palace in Aden, RTÉ reports. RTÉ reports that in July, a fragile 2022 truce fell apart after the Houthis allowed an Iranian plane to land in Yemen's capital Sanaa in defiance of Saudi control over Yemeni airspace, setting off a spate of attacks. According to RTÉ, Yahya Saree said, "Our armed forces call on those present at Aden airport to immediately evacuate due to the presence of a military cargo plane belonging to the Saudi enemy transporting weapons to kill the sons of the Yemeni people". The attack comes as fighting between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government has intensified in recent weeks, opening a volatile new front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran, Reuters reports. They have also intensified attacks on their Saudi foe, while they battle the government it backs in Aden, shifting the focus of the wider Middle East war that erupted with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, RTÉ reports. RTÉ reports that meanwhile, the Houthis have reported frequent Saudi airstrikes.

Reuters reports that the attack comes as fighting between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government has intensified in recent weeks, opening a volatile new front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran. Reuters reports that government forces have since pushed to retake territory on the Red Sea coast in a move that could loosen the Houthis' grip on the chokepoint, while the coalition has stepped up strikes against Houthi positions in response to the group's escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia. They have also intensified attacks on their Saudi foe, while they battle the government it backs in Aden, shifting the focus of the wider Middle East war that erupted with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, RTÉ reports.
