Tennessee halts execution after two lethal doses fail to kill Christa Pike

October 2, 2026

Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital in a Tennessee death chamber on Wednesday and is in critical condition, her attorneys say.

Christa Pike has been on Tennessee's death row for murder, in a state that has paused executions for review before, including in 2022.

CNN reports that Tennessee injected Christa Pike with two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday and that she lived; her attorneys said Thursday she is in critical condition and receiving care. NPR carries the same sequence from witnesses: Pike said her arm was burning after the first dose, kept breathing and snoring after the second, and her lawyers placed emergency calls before the state halted the procedure. The Tennessee Department of Correction said in a statement that it followed every step of its approved protocol. CNN reports that Gov. CNN reports that Gov. Bill Lee is cancelling the one execution Tennessee still had planned for the year until an outside review finishes, and that Pike's attorneys had warned the court beforehand about her vein problems.

The two outlets take different angles rather than different facts. CNN turns to legal precedent through Austin Sarat of Amherst College, who says failed executions are exceedingly rare and cites Willie Francis in Louisiana and Romell Broom in Ohio. “So we’re in kind of unprecedented territory with Pike in the sense of she survived her execution,” Sarat said. NPR widens the frame to national politics: the Death Penalty Information Center says no one before Pike had survived injection with lethal drugs, Marsha Blackburn calls for the electric chair while Jerri Green condemns the practice, and Amnesty International urges the US to abolish capital punishment. NPR also notes that in May, medical workers could not insert a second IV line for Tony Carruthers, and the state called off his execution.

The core facts agree across CNN and NPR: two doses, a survivor, a halted procedure and a hospital stay. What the state does next with Pike, and what the review finds, are still open.

Still developing

What is known about how Tennessee stopped the execution was still coming in at the time of this draft, and the third party review Lee announced has yet to determine what occurred.
