Prosecutors charge a Waltham man with cyberstalking Miller, wife of Stephen Miller

October 2, 2026

A Boston grand jury indicts John Anthony Proia III, 41, on one cyberstalking count over more than 40 calls and texts to Katie Miller.

Katie Miller is a conservative podcaster married to Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff at the White House, and the couple are frequent targets of threats.

The Washington Post reports that a Waltham, Massachusetts man, John Anthony Proia III, faces a single cyberstalking count at age 41, and that FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force agents arrested him Thursday before a federal court released him after his first appearance. NBC News and The Washington Post agree on the core allegation: more than 40 calls and texts to Katie Miller across roughly two months, with NBC News adding that her parents also received disturbing messages in the August to September span cited in court papers. The New York Times reports that the indictment names the target only as Victim-1, and ABC News likewise ties the case to Miller through a person familiar with it. Ted Docks, who leads the FBI's Boston Division, said Proia was arrested "for allegedly engaging in a sustained campaign of harassment to frighten this victim and her family, inflicting significant emotional distress."

The outlets differ in emphasis rather than fact. The Washington Post sets the case against a wider push by the Justice Department to prosecute threats against officials, noting that the cyberstalking statute asks prosecutors to show intent to harass and cause substantial emotional distress, a lower bar than the interstate threats law used against James B. Comey. It also reports that the FBI moved the two agents leading counterterrorism at its Washington field office last week over the slow pace of the Miller inquiry. The New York Times places the case among rising threats against public figures of every political stripe. Katie Miller thanked Todd Blanche, Leah Foley and the FBI Washington Field Office, writing "Good to see a Boston grand jury indict this man" on X, according to NBC News.

The arrest, the charge and the count of contacts are reported consistently across the coverage. Proia's response to the charge and the next steps in federal court are still developing.

Darren Cox, who leads the FBI Washington Field Office, said in a statement that the field office itself made the staffing change, citing “our constant evaluation of mission needs.”

Still developing

Last week the FBI transferred the agents running counterterrorism at its Washington field office, after higher ups deemed the investigation of the threats against Katie Miller slow.
