Britain links Iran to the RAF Fairford incident, after five arrests near the base

October 1, 2026

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says Britain believes Iran had a part in the RAF Fairford incident, in which five men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism.

RAF Fairford is a British air base in western England used by the US Air Force, which earlier this year was authorized to use it for strikes on Iran.

Politico reports that Prime Minister Andy Burnham says the British government holds Iran partly responsible for what happened at RAF Fairford, a British base the US Air Force uses. Police arrested five British men in their 20s early on Sunday, Politico reports, after Gloucestershire Police were told of vehicles acting suspiciously close to the base. The men were held first under the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Counter Terrorism Policing leads the inquiry, and Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said on Monday that investigators are weighing whether proxies acted for a foreign state.

Fox News reports that police declared a major incident at the base and that the government held a national emergency meeting. It also carries a post on X by Abbas Araghchi that cites Burnham's remark. Rubio said, “It's one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” Rubio said, “We're going to always take that very seriously. There will be repercussions for that, if it ever were to happen or even attempted.” The New York Times and Axios carry the same account in their headlines, both attributing to Burnham the view that Iran had a hand in the plot.

The outlets agree on the core: five arrests, a terrorism inquiry, and a British government that names Iran. What Iran did, and who acted for it, is still developing.

Araghchi wrote on X: “PM Burnham says the U.K. government ‘can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part’ in the RAF Fairford incident”.

Still developing

The motivation behind the incident remains under investigation, and police have said every possible angle is being investigated, including proxies working on behalf of a foreign state.
