NBC News reports how that lands with the people who would have to write the check. Pressed on whether he would deliver the payment, Speaker Johnson would only promise that lawmakers will look for agreement, and said he avoids firm commitments before doing the work. Kristen Welker, moderating, reminded him what voters had been told. Commerce Secretary Lutnick offered a different route in the same reporting, suggesting the administration could raise the money itself, though the mechanics of that go unexplained. NBC News prices a $5,000 payment to every U.S. adult at roughly $1.3 trillion.
One point does not settle. Asked whether lawmakers would have to sign off on the disbursement, one account has Trump waving the question away while allowing that Congress would act if asked; another account of the same exchange does not support that reading. The pledge, its dollar figure, its convention setting and the Speaker's refusal to guarantee it are corroborated across the coverage. The path the money would take is not.
Pressed on whether he would pledge to deliver on Trump's promise, Johnson said, “I commit that Congress will work through it and find consensus on that, like I have to do everything else.”
