Iran says it struck US assets in Kuwait

Iran's military says it hit a US air base in Kuwait with missiles and drones, and Trump says Washington is ready to strike Iran again.

AP News reports Iranian strikes aimed at what Tehran said were US assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq. The Guardian reports the Iranian military's own statement, carried on state television, that its forces hit satellite communication systems, equipment depots and aircraft hangars at the Ahmad al-Jaber air base in Kuwait. CNBC and Fox News carry the same statement, and the four accounts agree on the targets and the weapons used. CNBC reports Trump telling reporters he does not know how much more Iran can take, describing Tuesday's American strikes as a very heavy attack and saying the United States is ready for further operations "any time we want." Fox News and The Guardian carry those remarks as well.

AP News and The Guardian report Vice President JD Vance saying Thursday that Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz is "effectively gone," with Tehran losing leverage as US pressure builds, and Fox News carries the same remarks along with his advice to Tehran to stop shooting at commercial shipping. The Guardian reports Israeli defence minister Israel Katz saying the new US economic sanctions appear to be working while the added pressure could push Tehran toward extreme measures, and Fox News carries Katz on the same point. AP News reports the Netanyahu government's statement that Israel agreed to release five Lebanese civilians held by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, and Fox News carries that too. AP News also reports the funeral Thursday of two Palestinians, aged 16 and 19, killed by Israeli forces the night before in the occupied West Bank.

Two points split the accounts. On Iran's arsenal, one account reports that Tehran keeps firing missiles considerably cheaper to produce than the US interceptors used against them, while a competing account carries the administration's claim that Iran is running out of rockets; the split turns on whose estimate of the stockpile the account privileges, Iranian military statements or American officials. On diplomacy, one account has the administration refusing any engagement until attacks on commercial shipping stop, another does not support that condition. The strikes, the targets, the Israeli statements and Trump's own words are settled across the four outlets. The state of Iran's missile supply and the terms Washington sets for talks are not.
