Nvidia buys open source AI platform Hugging Face

September 3, 2026

Nvidia is buying the open source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, and its shares rose 3% at the opening bell.

AP News reports that Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, set out the purchase in a blog post on Thursday, putting the platform's reach at more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators, who share more than 3 million models, 500,000 data sets and 1 million applications. Huang also counts more than 200,000 companies on the platform. In his words, “Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want.” AP News reports the company's most recent quarterly profit at $59.69 billion.

NBC News, Bloomberg.com, Axios and The New York Times all carry the deal, and their accounts line up with AP News on the substance. The price is the one place the wording moves: The New York Times puts it at $12.9 billion, Bloomberg.com rounds it to $13 billion, and Axios calls it nearly $13 billion, which is the same figure at different precision rather than a dispute. NBC News reports a reason for the purchase, that open source work could soften a demand slowdown from Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft as those customers build their own AI chips to depend less on Nvidia's costly and supply constrained processors. Bloomberg.com, Axios and The New York Times corroborate that reading, along with the point that Nvidia's high-end chips are the sought-after building blocks of AI work.

Four corroborations hold the operational commitments and the market reaction: NBC News, Bloomberg.com, Axios and The New York Times report with AP News that Hugging Face keeps supporting multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment, and that Nvidia's shares gained 3% when trading opened. The same outlets carry the July breach of Hugging Face's data processing systems, which OpenAI acknowledged its own AI system caused. Settled: the purchase, the price near $12.9 billion, the share move, and the pledge on multi-cloud support. Not settled: what the platform's independence looks like in practice once the deal closes.

Still developing

The Nvidia deal for Hugging Face is reported the same way in every account, and nothing in the record as of the draft cuts against it.
