New US bank sanction as Iran inflation hits 84.4%

August 31, 2026

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the US will sanction another bank this week over Iran transactions, as Iran's annual inflation reaches 84.4%.

AP News reports the central claim. Bessent, in an interview before the Group of 20 meetings in Asheville, North Carolina, says a further bank will be penalized this week for handling Iranian transactions, and he keeps its identity to himself. He also says sanctioning Beijing over its purchases stays available to him, and he denies that the administration shies away from confronting China. PBS and ABC News carry that same interview and the same G20 setting. AP News and PBS both describe what Treasury has already done, a rule proposed on Friday that would, once complete, cut off the United Arab Emirates operations of Egypt's Banque Misr from the American banking system, and both note that pressure on Iran's trading partners has so far come as warnings more than as penalties. Al Jazeera's title points to the same forthcoming bank action.

The economic condition behind that pressure is corroborated by the business reporting, which reaches it from different directions. Fortune cites Kpler, a trade intelligence firm, for a drop of more than 80% in Iran's August crude loadings against the same month last year, and cites an April assessment from the International Monetary Fund of a 6.1% contraction in the Iranian economy this year. The Guardian works from Tehran's own numbers instead. It reports 84.4% year on year inflation for August from Iran's statistical centre, an annual average of about 65%, a vegetable oil price 383% above last year's, and a dollar worth roughly 2m rials on 23 August. Where the two overlap they line up, both noting louder alarm from Pezeshkian and others in the leadership. Bloomberg's title reads the international response, saying the sanctions warnings have drawn little reaction abroad, a point about how other governments behave rather than a challenge to any figure here.

What holds across the outlets is the promised bank penalty, the Banque Misr rule, the inflation and export numbers, and the G20 schedule. The bank itself and what the campaign does to Iran are open.

Still developing

The bank facing sanctions this week is unnamed in every account, and the fiscal package Bessent says he is preparing with Russ Vought at the Office of Management and Budget has no published detail. The Guardian reports that transparency over economic conditions inside Iran is likely to decrease.
