Ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsizes

A passenger ferry travelling from northern Cyprus to Turkey with nearly 270 people aboard capsized, killing at least eight, with 18 still missing.
CNN reports that rescuers are still working the Mediterranean crossing between northern Cyprus and Turkey, where a ferry with nearly 270 people aboard turned over and at least eight died. The prime minister of the self declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ünal Üstel, calls it the worst maritime disaster the island has known, according to CNN, which also reports that the captain and seven of the crew are now in custody. BBC puts the toll at eight dead and 19 people under hospital care in northern Cyprus, citing local authorities. BBC also reports that the vessel went down whole and now rests 514m (1,686ft) below the surface, on an island whose northern third the TRNC has held since the 1974 division.
The survivor accounts fit together rather than clash. BBC recounts a mother who got a hand around her daughter's foot after a suitcase came down on her, then lost the child when engine oil on the girl's shoes defeated her grip. Reuters carries that same mother describing the moment her daughter went out of reach, and The New York Times gathers survivors on how narrowly they got clear of the sinking. CNN reports another survivor who watched water come in and the deck tilt hard to one side, with life jackets and exits both hard to reach. One survivor tells CNN, “Some people couldn’t find the life vests, so they had to jump off without them.” Al Jazeera reports the search for the 18 people not yet found.
