Gates essay names three AI risks

Bill Gates publishes a nearly 6,000-word essay setting out three major risks from AI and calling on governments to build new institutions for the transition.

Gates devotes an essay of nearly 6,000 words to three dangers he sees in artificial intelligence, Fortune reports. Work tops the list. He expects that, as he puts it, "many jobs will disappear forever," and worries most about the young, whose entry rungs are thinning. Crime follows. Fraud, fabricated media, propaganda and surveillance all become cheaper to run, and the reach extends to people, firms and states alike once technical skill stops being a barrier. Fortune reports he offers no single illustration of how far the technology has come, describing his own feelings about its speed as complicated.

He sets the gains out beside the warnings. Medicine, schooling and farming are where Fortune reports he expects the clearest returns, along with something smaller: the paperwork of applying for student aid, insurance or food support, which he says leaves families exhausted. Small conveniences, spread across millions of people, become something larger. His closing ask goes to governments, which he wants building the institutions and rules for this transition while employment, communities and public trust are still intact.
