Reno wildfire triggers Nevada emergency, evacuations

A fast-moving, uncontained wildfire northwest of Reno has forced mass evacuations in Washoe County, where Nevada's governor declared a state of emergency.
AP News describes a blaze that outran the crews sent to stop it, leaping past engines Saturday night and cutting responders off from hot spots while families were still trying to drive away. Why the region was primed to burn draws no argument. AP News and CBC point to a parched stretch of months and the thinnest snowpack on record across the West this past winter, to 15 fresh ignitions statewide on Saturday alone, and to a month that had already pushed 60,000 people out around Spokane and over 13,000 out of areas north of Reno. The open question is how many people this fire displaced. One account attaches 90,000 to the order to leave, while a competing account walks through the same declaration and the same zones without ever landing on a figure, so the count a reader takes away depends on which version they read.
