16,250 Ebola doses arrive in DR Congo

Kinshasa took delivery of 16,250 Ervebo doses late Friday at N’djili International Airport, part of 70,000 announced by the World Health Organization and partners.

Reuters carries the same allocation figure of 70,000. Al Jazeera reports the arrival of more than 16,000 doses in the affected country. France 24 sets the delivery against an outbreak spreading exponentially. On the delivery itself, the accounts agree: the quantity, the airport, the timing, and the promise of more.

BBC reports this is the country's deadliest outbreak and the second worst on record, behind only the West African epidemic of 2014 to 2016, which killed more than 11,000 people. The WHO warning that the disease is "growing exponentially" in the north and east, across an area larger than France, is carried by BBC, Reuters, France 24 and Al Jazeera alike. Julien Harneis, the WHO's Ebola co-ordinator, told reporters that half of the deaths happened in the last 20 days. BBC also reports a Save the Children finding that at least 180 Congolese children have lost both parents or caregivers, and that infections of the Bundibugyo species were taken for typhoid and malaria when they may have begun circulating as early as February. The M23 group holding parts of the east has imposed new movement restrictions between government and rebel areas of North Kivu after two travellers tested positive, having declared its zones Ebola-free in late June.

What the vaccine will do is the open question. The World Health Organization (WHO) states it is not known whether Ervebo may be protective against the Bundibugyo virus in humans, and expects a clinical trial to supply evidence for future policy; AP News reports the agency's position that some protection is possible. Settled: the doses landed, the toll leads the country's record, and the spread is widening. Unsettled: whether Ervebo protects against this species, and how the release was set in motion, where one account starts with a government request to the global stockpile and another with the allocation the health agencies made.
